Featured artist: Jesse Link
Better late than never. I wrote this blog post almost exactly a year ago and somehow never published it. That also means that the show is no longer up at All City Coffee, but please enjoy Jesse’s wonderful anyways!
Here’s the original post:
Nothing better than going for a good cup of coffee (single short soy latte) in an artsy coffee shop (All City Coffee) of a cool Seattle neighborhood (Georgetown) while a local artist (Jesse Link) puts up new art for July.
From Jesse’s website:
“Jesse Link grew up in a small town just outside of Pittsburgh, PA but has lived in Seattle for the past 5 years. He has a degree in Industrial Design From the Art Institute of Pittsburgh but is a mostly self-taught painter. His subject matter has become more diverse in recent years as he expands his sphere of artistic interest but whatever the subject, Link tries to create a harmony between nature and urban culture through his imagery and styles. www.jesselink.com“
The wonderful world of Kelly
On my walk through the Capitol Hill neighborhood in Seattle last night I looked into the window of the cute boutique CakeSpy Shop, where I saw a few of my dear friend and crazy talented artist Kelly Brownlee’s paintings. I asked for permission to take a picture of the paintings to share them here with you. Aren’t they just adorable?
I met Kelly 5 or 6 years ago through Biznik and we’ve been in touch ever since. We’ve collaborated a few times on projects. She designed a bunch of stunning collections for MOGO and recently illustrated the artwork for a Swiss startup called unblu that I am designing for.
Make sure to take a look at Kelly’s website and her Etsy shop, you’re bound to be smitten!
Happy colorful art that influenced me as a child
While we’re having a record warm February in Seattle with a perfectly blue sky and more sunshine than I would have dared hoping for this time of year, Europe is experiencing record cold temperatures right now. But with that comes one of my favorite changes in my hometown Basel, Switzerland. The Tiguely fountain is once again iced over and transformed into a magical winter wonderland.
The photo below is from the Basler Zeitung. Isn’t this gorgeous? For those of you not familiar with this fountain on a non icy day, you can check out this video on YouTube.
As a child, my parents and grand parents often took me to this fountain, designed by Jean Tinguely, an artist from my hometown. I still remember how mesmerized I was with this fountain and it’s may kinetic details. Years later I learned that Jean Tinguely teamed up with Niki de Saint Phalle on several projects, including this gorgeous fountain outside Centre Pompidou in Paris.
I have always been and still am in awe with Tinguely and Sain Phalle’s use of happy bright colors and their ability to make art while clearly having fun with it. Below are a few of their pieces, to highlight some of their work and hopefully put a smile on your face. Enjoy!

A Mexican love story
Last week, two of my favorite people got married. To celebrate their union, they invited friends and family to spend a week with them in paradise (aka Tulum, Mexico). It was a perfect week with lots of sunshine, beautiful weather, good friends and very much love!
Below are a few sketches that I drew on the beach. Happy life together Angela and Hernan!
A little glimpse into my Instagram gallery
A few weeks ago I got approached by @PedroAlmeida one of my Instagram followers, asking me if I wanted to participate in a new multimedia web project on Público newspaper, a Portuguese daily news site. Never having been asked anything like this before, I felt honored to be one of the photographers they picked for this series and sent him 10 photos that best represent my style on Instagram and a brief blurb about my experience with daily social photography. Just a few weeks later, I got an email that it’s up on their site. Extra bonus points if you speak Portuguese and can actually read the description on the right.

Ring, ring… who’s there?
In a time of text based communication it’s getting easier and easier for people to reduce phone calls to a bare minimum. I was never one to voluntarily pick up the phone to just call someone to chat. At best, I’d use it to communicate something that couldn’t wait or to arrange a time to meet someone in person, at worst, I’d simply let it ring and wait for it to go to voice mail. For me as a visual person, I like to see someone when I talk to them, or at least read them in email or text messages. With Face Time, I am slowly warming up to “phone” conversations with friends and family overseas, but it’s still not the same as talking to them in person. Last week, a friend took me to an underground art show in Basel, Switzerland where this caged phone hung as part of an installation. It immediately spoke to me; a vintage phone hanging in mid air, out of reach as an object of the past. Would you pick it up if it rang?
Follow Friday on Instagram
Twitter started this lovely tradition that’s now slowly but surely getting adopted on Instagram. The #ff hashtag stands for “Follow Friday” and is a signal of your support and recommendation of fellow users to your friends!
I am sooo excited about the users I picked today, that I’d like to share them with you here on my blog. If you’re not on Instagram, just click on the @links below each set of photos to view them in your browser.
@_kitkat from Australia will make you happy with her pastel fantasy world
@iconomaque is a creative director from Paris with an exquisit eye for details
@yokopium is an artist from Japan who paints a world where whimsical geometry meets color.
And last but not least I’d like to introduce @dankhole who’s clean architectural photos seem to all make the popular page. Take a look and you’ll know why!
Watch ‘em grow!
My friend Amit (@meetamit) created a super cute website called Watch ‘em grow! where you can click and drag on a blank page to grow your own beautiful vines pattern. Give it a try, I LOVE it!
Summer fun with MOGO Click Flops
About a year ago, I was commissioned to design a repeating pattern for the tween charm bracelet company MOGO. The idea was to use the design as a prominent visual element for their new flip flops. Just in time for summer, the “Click Flops” (cute name!) arrived in stores (online and brick & mortar). I can’t wait to get my fingers (and toes!) on them!
Note Cards at Muse Coffee
To complement the ten screen prints of my July art show, Muse Coffee on Queen Anne in Seattle is now also selling blank note cards with matching designs. What a beautiful space to feature my art!
